Red cloth front cover has a black border design, title in gold gilt outlined with black and also a large crab in gold gilt catching a shrimp, with text and illustrations that are bright with no rubbing. The rear board has a debossed flower design. All the board edges show slight edge wear with more along the bottom near the spine. The spine is also in gold gilt with black text but has a chip out of the back strip as well as cloth wear at the top and bottom. All corners are worn with bumping. Also, slight blemishes to the rear board. Spine has a slight slant but with not cracking to the decorative endpapers, although there is an approximate 2" tear in the fabric at the top of the rear gutter. The overall text block is solid with all pages firmly attached and gold gilt to all three edges of the text block. Age tanning throughout. Tissue guard over frontispiece illustration is intact. There is a previous owner book plate on the front endpaper, a sticker with his name underneath. On the reverse side of the front free end paper there is a paper plaque glued in stating the book was presented to "Caryl D. Haskins, midsummer 1880, as a Prize for Chemistry Essay & General information". Otherwise, all interior pages are clean with no tears, cracks, or other previous owner marks. Fully illustrated with black & white in text engravings. 192 pages including eight pages of advertisements.
