About This Item
Brown cloth hardcover boards with unique silver gilt decoration to both the front and rear boards. Black text and illustration with silver accents. Front and rear boards have beveled edges with minimal edge wear and damage to the corners – although the spine and corners do should some edge wear and bumping. Small blemishes to both the front and back covers. The spine is straight and firmly attached to the end papers with only a small approximate 4" crack starting on the front. Stitched binding and text block are solid with no slanting and heavy based on thickness of pages. Darkening at some pages edges, some foxing and age tanning throughout. Interior pages are clean with no chips, tears, or other previous owner marks but there was a small flower bouquet placed in the book at Old Don Henri and his Little Sweetheart that we have left in the book that did cause browning where it was placed. "Olde Don Henri's Sketches, Songs and Ballades – the Story of Popsey Manor" is not your typical children story book for today but in 1888 it would have been a beautiful gift book with stories from the times. Filled with Victorian era black & white engravings the stories include: The Story of Bear Hollow, Old Don Henri and his Little Sweetheart, Seraphina's Courtship, Seraphina's Wedding, Good-bye Sweetheart, Songs of Popsey Manor (Polly, Polly, Popsey O, Polly's White Rabbit, Polly's Red Cheecks, Polly's Slumbers, Hallow-My-Chin-Ko-Wee, Polly's Joys to Come, Chick-A-Ma-Chick-Ma-Tek-Me-O, The Prodigal Sun, Polly's Ride and They All Go Marching Home). The first portion of the book are stories but the Songs of Popsey Manor are all poems.
