London: Tinsley Brothers, 1876. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Original red cloth with gilt titling to spine. Some edgewear and soiling to edges of cloth, bumping and rubbing to corners but overall in solid shape. Hinges lightly cracked but holding together well. Spines darkened but gilt titling is bright. Top page edges darkened, some foxing to first few and last few pages, but minor and not present throughout the text. Bookplates of Sir Henry Bellingham, Bt, to front pastedowns of both volumes, and inscription of Henry (or Harry) Bellingham, dated January 1901, in both volumes. The secret societies treated by the author are: Vol. 1 - The Illuminati, The United Irishmen, The Philadelphians, The Tugenbund, The Carbonari, The Associated Patriots, the Communeros. Vol. 2 - The Reformed Carbonari, The Hetairia, The United Schlavonians, The Templars, Young Italy, The Families, Young Germany, Young Poland, Young Switzerland, The Communists, The Fenians, The Nihilists, The Omladina. Vol 1 - 300 pp. Vol 2 - 338 pp w/ short index.
