About This Item
Four parts: Susan Spray; part two, p. 73: Susan Strudwick; part three, part 3, p. 175: Susan Clarabut; and part 4, p. 309, Susan Pell. End pages and artwork in a light copper tone. The Susan Spray story opens noting her birth at Copthorne on the Surrey and Sussex borders in 1834. A poor field labourer, worked on a farm known as Pickdick. He had married early and was 22 when Susan was born. He and Ruth were so proud of little Susan. Two other sisters were born before Susan grew out of her first calico dresses. They belonged to an obscure sect, the Colgate Brethren, composed nof the laboring class, and most not reading. At Sunday meetings a cowman, Backshell, alone gifted with letters, would read the Word of God. Susan Spray would be selected to go to the village school. So, readers, come sit with this young 19th century family as they learn more of the world. Deckled page blocks, top black dye.
