Description:
New York: Frederick A. Stokes, 1925. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Presentation copy, inscribed and dated in the year of publication by Wendell Endicott on the front flyleaf. An avid sportsman, Endicott (1880-1954) attended Harvard University (1899-1901) and served as a director of Sears, Roebuck and Company in Chicago during the 1920s and '30s. This book includes his reminiscences of battling the "Silver King" (Atlantic tarpon) and other game fish along the Florida Keys, as well as a selection of fishing facts and suggestions. Octavo: 273 p. with 80 illustrations from photographs by the author. Original dark green cloth-covered boards over a light green spine, with gilt stamping. Just a hint of foxing to the prefatory and concluding pages, with some faint evidence of moisture along the top edge of the last three dozen pages. Tiny period bookseller's label to the front flyleaf. The spine is a touch faded, with some rubbing to the corners and tips; else about very good.

Edinburgh and London: John Anderson & Co; Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme & Brown, 1813. Second edition. Two volumes, pp vi, 496; vi, 496, some age-toning and slight blemishes, a few lightly turned cornes, but overall good, sound and tight internally, contemporary full calf, a bit worn and bumped, the boards showing though at the corners, a tear to the upper cover of the second volume which has been neatly secured, the rear joint of the first volume is cracked but still firm. An uncommon early edition. [Dr John Murray FRSE FGS (17781820) was a short-lived 19th century British physician and prominent scientist, working in the fields of physics, chemistry, and geology, and described by Brydges as a "Chemical Philiospher". His first important published work, "Elements of Chemistry", appeared when he was only 23. He was born in Edinburgh in 1778 and educated at the High School. He studied Medicine at St Andrews University graduating around 1798. He appears in Edinburgh again in 1810 as a lecturer in Chemistry. He later also lectured in Materia Medica, Pharmacy and Natural Philosophy (Physics). In 1812 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh for his contributions to Geology, his proposers being Thomas Charles Hope, Robert Jameson, and Sir George Steuart Mackenzie. He was made a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1815 and was also elected a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society of London. He presented 28 papers to the Royal Society, the most important relating to proposals for a safety lamp for miners. He received his doctorate (MD) in 1814.]. Second edition. Full Leather. Good.

Original dust sheet. Green cloth with gilt title on the spine. One hundred and seventy-six early Turners, most in colour and reproduced for the first time, and 22 other reproductions.
Joseph Mallord William Turner RA (23 April 1775 – 19 December 1851), known in his time as William Turner, was an English Romantic painter, printmaker and watercolourist. He is known for his expressive colourisations, imaginative landscapes and turbulent, often violent marine paintings. He left behind more than 550 oil paintings, 2,000 watercolours, and 30,000 works on paper. He was championed by the leading English art critic John Ruskin from 1840, and is today regarded as having elevated landscape painting to an eminence rivalling history painting. Turner was born in Maiden Lane, Covent Garden, London, to a modest lower-middle-class family. He lived in London all his life, retaining his Cockney accent and assiduously avoiding the trappings of success and fame. A child prodigy, Turner studied at the Royal Academy of… Read More

John (Archibald Thorburn) Archibald Thorburn FZS (31 May 1860, Lasswade, Midlothian - 9 October 1935, Hascombe, Surrey) was a Scottish artist who specialised in wildlife, painting mostly in watercolour. He regularly visited Scotland to sketch birds in the wild, his favourite haunt being the Forest of Gaick near Kingussie in Invernesshire. His widely reproduced images of British wildlife, with their evocative and dramatic backgrounds, are enjoyed as much today as they were by naturalists a century ago. Archibald was born at Viewfield House, Lasswade, Midlothian, the fifth son of Robert Thorburn (1818–1885), portrait miniaturist to Queen Victoria. His first education was at Dalkeith and in Edinburgh, after which he was sent to the newly founded St John's Wood School of Art in London. His stay there was only brief, since on the death of his father he sought the guidance of Joseph Wolf. It… Read More

Red calf spine and corners with raised and gilt banding and gilt title. Red and blue marbled boards, end papers and page edges.A very good copy Godolphin is a satirical 19th-century British romance novel by Edward Bulwer-Lytton. It is about the life of an idealistic man, Percy Godolphin, and his eventual lover, Constance Vernon. Written as a frame narrative, Godolphin provides a satirical insight into the day-to-day lives of the early 19th-century British elite. The story is told through the narration of two protagonists, Percy Godolphin and Constance Vernon, as they rise to prominence among the London elite. Godolphin was published two years after The Reform Bill passed which put an end to the exclusive high class in England. Bulwer-Lytton, being a politician, was a member of this British elite. Literary scholar William Cragg reveals that the original novel published in 1833 was replaced in 1840 with a revised copy. Bulwer-Lytton received very harsh criticisms upon the novel's original release due… Read More

New York: William Morrow and Company, inc., 1987. First Edition. Extensively illustrated with large and beautiful photographs. Square 4to, publisher’s original pictorial boards in the original decorated dustjacket. (30). A fine, bright copy. In clear, concise text and exceptional, full color photographs, noted science author Seymour Simon explains how different types of glaciers and icebergs are formed, how they move, and how they affect life on Earth. He also explores some of their mysteries: Can icebergs be used as a source of fresh water for dry lands? And will the ice ages return, covering the continents with glaciers as they did twenty thousand years ago?
