Manning, Cardinal Manning, one of the four main subjects of the book, as follows -"Dear Sir, I have very great pleasure in accepting your kind invitation for Monday next; which will compensate me for losing the visit you were so good as to make the other day. With my kind regards believe me, Very faithfully yours, Henry E. Manning". From the collection of the noted American book collector, industialist and philanthropist J. K. Lilly, Jr., with gift inscription at 2nd blank front end page -"Dear Mr Lilly, Memory Lane, now twenty years long with happy Lilly associations, has no milestone more pleasant, than our Great lakes Cruise. With affectionate regards, William A. Hanley, Indianapolis, July 1930". William A. Hanley was an electrical engineer who worked his way up from supervisor, and head of the engineering division to director of Eli Lilly and Company. Finely bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe in dark blue polished calf, gilt back, marbled end papers with wide and intricate gilt tun-ins, all edges gilt, portrait photographic frontis of Cardinal Manning, Very Good Plus, rubbed at joints and edges. ix, (2), 302 pages, with 6 plates showing Cardinal Manning; John Henry Newman; Florence Nightingale; Dr. Arnold; General Gordon; Mr. Gladstone. A lovely finely bound copy with distinguished provenance and a letter SIGNED BY CARDINAL MANNING. . Later Printing. Polished Calf. Very Good Plus/No Jacket, As Issued. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
