About This Item

London: George Routledge and Sons,, 1876. First British hardcover edition, following by months a London paperback edition with fewer illustrations. Verne's Les Enfants du capitaine Grant (1867-8) was first translated into English in America as In Search of the Castaways (1873). Routledge issued the tale in Britain as three separate books, starting with this South America edition and concluding with Australia (1877) and New Zealand (1877). A number of binding variants were issued, without priority. Octavo. Original green cloth, spine lettered on gilt ground, spine and front cover pictorially blocked in black, blind rules and publisher's device on rear cover, coated endpapers. Frontispiece and vignette title page with tissue guard, 23 plates, further wood engravings in the text. Bright binding with bumped spine ends and minor rubbing, partial splits to inner hinges, foxing to edges and initial blanks, else clean. A near-fine copy.
