A collection of bound correspondence, drafts, drawings, and other documentation (in xerox copies) with participants of the international art festival "Konstrukcja w procesie" (Construction in process), held in Łódź in 1981. The festival, and its resulting publication, FABRYKA, included works by major contemporary international artists, such as Sol Lewitt, Richard Nonas, Les Levine, Lawrence Weiner, and Paul Sharits. Curated by the artist and critic Ryszard Waśko (born 1947), the exhibit's core was held at the Budrem factory, where artists used the factory floor to make, exhibit, and stage their art. The festival was supported by the local branch of the Solidarity trade union, connecting art with political dissent, with the festival using the Solidarnośċ font for their posters. A vibrant children's book about a team of "shock-worker" kids who try and eventually succeed in meeting their plan of expanding the size of their preschool zoo to ten animals. The book was the result of an artistic work trip to Jewish collective farms in Crimea, by the then prominent author of children's books Lina-Sofia Samuilovna Neiman (1885-1971). Born in Kovno (modern-day Lithuania), Neiman studied history at the Odessa Higher Courses for Women, later moving to Moscow to study Russian at the Moscow Higher Courses for Women. She would publish her first book for children in 1912, eventually becoming a regular writer for the Soviet Children's magazine "Murzilka", with 48 of her short stories published in the periodical in 1927-1933. A pioneering work of set design by a major artist of early Soviet cinema, Sergei Kozlovskii (1885-1962), with wrappers by the avant-garde artist and graphic designer Varvara Stepanova (1894-1958). Broadly considered one of the great innovators of Soviet set design, Kozlovskii introduced the use of prefabricated basic film sets, which could be disassembled into component parts. The process is described in this text with accompanying diagrams and sketches. The process became standardized across Soviet film studios in the late 1930s transforming the film production process. A graduate of Odessa Technical Art School, Kozlovskii worked in theater design in Ukraine, before moving into cinema in 1913. The first 26 volumes (which includes the 1915 reprint of The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin) of this complete set are in very good+ to near fine condition and are all bound in dark green cloth covered boards. None of the dark green volumes have prior owner's names or markings in them. The 25 volumes bound in red are all in at least very good+ condition or better and none of them have any prior ownership markings of any kind. All 25 volumes of the "blues" are in fine condition; although four of the years (1974-1977) have a prior owner's raised, embossed seal on the front end pages. All of the "browns" are in fine condition; however, two volumes (1978 and 1980) have a prior owner's raised, embossed seal on the front end pages; and, 1979 has the ghost of a removed book plate from the front paste down. An exceptional example of innovative constructivist typographic design by Telingater that intended to enhance the work of the leftist poet Semyon Kirsanov. Solomon Telingater (1903-1969) was a Russian graphic artist, designer and typeface designer. Telingater wrote influential books on typography and designed some of the most memorable books of the Soviet period. He was the first Soviet citizen to receive the Gutenberg award for his achievements in designing books and typefaces.
