Description:
Prague: Nakladatel Fr. Borový, 1916. Octavo (22 × 13.4 cm). Original pictorial wrappers by Hofman; 122, [6] pp. With fourteen smaller and three full-page drawings by Hofman. Very good; in protective mylar. The first book publication by the Čapek brothers (Karel and Josef Čapek), this collection of experimental prose works was illustrated throughout by the architect and artist Vlastislav Hofman. A prolific author of prose and plays, Karel Čapek is today best known for his groundbreaking science fiction play R.U.R., in which the word 'robot' was used for the first time. It was in fact coined by his brother Josef, a noted Czech painter and book designer. Alongside Josef Čapek and Bedřich Feuerstein, Hofman (1884-1964) is considered not only a key figure of Czech Cubism, but also a pioneer of the Czech avant-garde around Devětsil, who strove to unite the different genres. He is known today primarily as an architect, furniture designer, and stage designer; he was also a painter and essayist. Not…

Tokyo: Jonan Shoin, 1944. Quarto (29.5 x 21.3 cm). Stamped cloth, with accompanying printed cardboard slipcase; 114 pp. Some browning to flyleaves, light toning to slipcase, overall very good. Tachū Naitō (1886-1970) was a Japanese architect, engineer, and professor. He was a pioneer in earthquake-proof design and built many broadcasting and observation towers, including the Tokyo Tower. He also engineered the Industrial Bank of Japan's main office and worked on the Kabuki-za and Okuma auditorium. In 1941 he was named chair of the Architectural Institute of Japan, in 1954 became a member of the Science Council of Japan, in 1960 a member of the Japan Academy, and in 1964 was awarded a second-class Order of the Rising Sun. This volume is comprised almost entirely of photographs and plans of Naitō's pre-World War II architectural works. Primarily black-and-white, there is one double-page colored plate and two small tipped-in color plates. The architectural styles range from traditional Japanese…

Prague: Ústřední studentské knihkupectví a nakladatelství, 1930. Quartos (30 × 21.5 cm). Original staple-stitched decorative wrappers; 1-48 and 49-96 pp. With 14 illustrations per issue. Very minor wear to spine and corners; one corner with small repair to inside of wrapper; overall very good. Complete run of the important journal of the Czech avant-garde, which signaled the shift from the "poetism" of Devětsil (the movement would disband in 1931) as well as from the rationalism of constructivism and other left tendencies in art. Interestingly, the editorial statement of the first volume denies that the journal was primarily a surrealist publication; the contents suggest otherwise. (See Derek Sayer, Prague, Capital of the Twentieth Century A Surrealist History, 2021, p. 242). The contributions include André Breton's second "Manifesto of Surrealism", long theoretical articles by Karel Teige and Bohuslav Brouk, works by Adolf Hoffmeister ("Polypoliticum Berlína), Vilím Závada, Konstantin…

Description:
Softcover. Very good. An interesting collection of 14 auction catalogues and a map relating to the sale of residential and commercial real estate in Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island in 1926. The catalogues, which range in length but average about 16 pages each, come from five different real estate auctioneers -- Realty Associates, Henry Gilligan & Co, William Kennelly, Jere. Johnson Jr. Co., and McPhilliamy & Heaney -- all of whom conducted auctions at the Brooklyn Real Estate Exchange. The Exchange was incorporated in 1889, and erected a handsomely appointed modern building at 189 Montague Street in 1890. Its stated objectives were "to create in the City of Brooklyn a center for dealings in real estate; to established in the said city a room for selling real estate and securities at auction; to let out stands for auctioneers and furnish a general meeting room for real estate dealers and brokers; to unite the various real estate and building interests of the City of Brooklyn and vicinity; to…

I Saw It "presents the poem of that same title written by the Soviet Jewish poet Ilya Selvinsky (1899-1968). Selvinsky was the first Jewish-Russian poet to depict the Holocaust (Shoah) in the occupied Soviet territories. In January 1942, while serving as a military journalist, Selvinsky witnessed the immediate aftermath of the massacre of thousands of Jews outside the Crimean city of Kerch, and thereafter composed and published this poem about it. Partnering with noted typographer and fine-press printer Philip Gallo, Bart designed the book, clamshell box, and created the artwork. This…
