The first book publication by the Čapek brothers (Karel and Josef Čapek), this collection of experimental prose works was illustrated throughout by the architect and artist Vlastislav Hofman. A prolific author of prose and plays, Karel Čapek is today best known for his groundbreaking science fiction play R.U.R., in which the word 'robot' was used for the first time. It was in fact coined by his brother Josef, a noted Czech painter and book designer. Alongside Josef Čapek and Bedřich Feuerstein, Hofman (1884-1964) is considered not only a key figure of Czech Cubism, but also a pioneer of the Czech avant-garde around Devětsil, who strove to unite the different genres. Tachū Naitō (1886-1970) was a Japanese architect, engineer, and professor. He was a pioneer in earthquake-proof design and built many broadcasting and observation towers, including the Tokyo Tower. He also engineered the Industrial Bank of Japan's main office and worked on the Kabuki-za and Okuma auditorium. In 1941 he was named chair of the Architectural Institute of Japan, in 1954 became a member of the Science Council of Japan, in 1960 a member of the Japan Academy, and in 1964 was awarded a second-class Order of the Rising Sun. This volume is comprised almost entirely of photographs and plans of Naitō's pre-World War II architectural works. Very minor wear to spine and corners; one corner with small repair to inside of wrapper; overall very good. Complete run of the important journal of the Czech avant-garde, which signaled the shift from the "poetism" of Devětsil (the movement would disband in 1931) as well as from the rationalism of constructivism and other left tendencies in art. Interestingly, the editorial statement of the first volume denies that the journal was primarily a surrealist publication; the contents suggest otherwise. First edition, third impression; the scarcest of all Jonathan Cape impressions, as confirmed by the Cape Archive's book production ledger. There is no printed price, indicating that it was intended for export. A seasonal case for the great Belgian detective, from the queen of the Golden Age of Crime.

Decorations by Gilbert Rumbold. With the inserted errata slip at pg. 25. The spine is faded and most of the gilt lettering chipped away, worn at the foot and head with the front cloth split at the front board, only held by a neat strip of glue. The boards with light rubbing and bumping to the corners, some light scuffing and scratching to the front illustrations and rather light scratching to the rear board. No damage to internal hinges, very faint damp stain to the top fore-edge tip of the first two pages, and a couple of small light spots to a few pages following the errata. This 1904 authorized first American edition of the prayer book of King Edward VII, outlines the Church of England's order of rituals, rites, ceremonies, as well as the administration of the sacraments. This edition was published under a joint arrangement involving the Essex House Press, the Guild of Handicraft, and M. Walter Dunne of New York.
