An 8"x10" binder featuring photocopied drawings and diagrams for the various sections of the Starship Enterprise from the movie Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979). The binder is one of several put together by Lee Cole, head console designer, for cast members, to inform them and series writers about the redesigned spaceship. The binder covers Bridge layout, individual components of the Bridge, the Engine Room, the Briefing Room, the Transporter Room, Kirk's Quarters, the Medical Lab, the Examining Room, and the Sick Bay (bed monitor). There are five sections separated by tabs; each page within a tab is protected by a clear page protector. Hal Michelson, credited as the production designer along with Joseph R. Unknown, 1941. 1st edition. Buff card covers as issued, 12 x 16cm, this is a fascinating and unique snapshot of the origin and meaning of many of the streets and roads in Shanghai as at 1941 during the rule by the National Government under Chiang Kai-shek. After 1949, under the People's Republic of China, many of these streets would be renamed, to reflect a new modernity rather than an imperial past, for many of the street names bore testimony to the influence and settlements of three foreign powers - Britain, France and America - over the previous century. A.H.Gordon's collection includes photographs of old Shanghai, and advertisements by some of the city's largest firms which give intriguing information about the city (the Shanghai Telephone Co, for example, announces the use of 91,079 telephones that year), while his list of street names is cross-referenced to the loose fold-out map (in remarkable condition) in the front pocket which shows the detailed layout of these thoroughfares.… Read More

Fine in a Near Fine dust jacket, lightly worn and a little toned with age, unclipped ($3.95). A Columbia University professor interviews the famous Argentinian writer.

The fifth novel, a brilliant and incredibly violent book from the author of "All The Press Horses" and the recent "Stella Maris" and "The Passenger." A tight near fine copy in paper covered boards with a cloth spine with some slight soiling to the top edge of the pages and in a near fine dust jacket with a tear to the top of the front panel near the spine, a crease to the front flap and some other minor wear. Still, a very nice copy of one of the most powerful novels of the 20th century.

This copy INSCRIBED by the author at time of publication to fellow SF writer Wilmar Shiras, "To Wilmar Shiras, With all good wishes from another "Gnome" author. Arthur C. Clarke, New York, 24 June 53." Clarke here references CHILDREN OF THE ATOM, a Gnome Press publication by Shiras. The authors first novel begun in 1937 !!!

THE DEATH GUARD, Hutchinson, 1939, 1st ed. (3rd Thousand), some old modest moisture staining to sections of the cloth covers, else a tight vg copy in just about vg full color pictorial dust-wrapper with 2 small chips and some dust-soiling, mostly to the rear dust-wrapper panel along with some inner clear tape reinforcement to the upper and lower margins. Rare in any dw, this being one of only four copies I have seen in nearly 50 years so properly adorned. ( Although the author is virtually unknown to the wider public, his work has received attention from literary scholars. The novel contains many themes later developed by L Ron Hubbard and James Blish. Chadwick was a political thinker with socialist tendencies, a Fabian and subsequently an Independent and a disciple of H.G. Wells. Legend has it that Wells used to refer to this book as one of the greatest he had ever read. The source book for the film of the same name. (As there was no trade edition by this publisher, this translates to the fact that the 6th novel by one of the most collected authors of the last quarter of the 20th century had a first edition print run of 751 copies !!! A book that continues to rise in price now almost exponentially. In the future ----- well, you do the math !!!)

One of the subscriber's copies. (If you haven't read this science fiction murder mystery, you've really missed something quite innovative in the genre).

INSCRIBED by the author to a fellow writer, "For - Where would we be without readers?" Dated also by the author 12/2/1950, the earliest known date of any SIGNED or INSCRIBED copies.

*** ARTHUR C. CLARKE'S COPY ***WHO GOES THERE?, Shasta Publishers, 1948, 1st ed., g/vg in worn and chipped (mostly at the dust-wrapper spine) Hannes Bok BEM (Bug Eyed Monster) dust-wrapper. Along with a fine facsimile dust-wrapper as well. One of the great classic short story collections of the period. SIGNED by the author as well as SIGNED and dated in 1948 by the previous owner, Arthur C. Clarke. Most likely the only copy extant SIGNED by both these giants of the genre. A most desirable item as well as the source book for the twice made film THE THING.

THE END OF ETERNITY, Doubleday, 1955, first edition, very fine (the covers snap back) in like pictorial dust-wrapper with the red lettering on the spine lightly faded. A time travel novel. SIGNED post-card by the author laid in.

**SCARCEST GNOME PUBLICATIONS** THE SCIENCE FICTION WORLD, Gnome Press, 1955 thru 1957, 4 volumes (of 6), each in first edition, a just about fine set. This newsletter was actually written for the most part by Robert Bloch with a little help from Bob Tucker. They are extremely scarce and most probably the stoppers for all Gnome Press and Robert Bloch completists. Indeed, as noted in THE SCIENCE FANTASY PUBLISHERS by Chalker & Owings, Mirage Press, 1991: Gnome Press "produced 4 issues (actually 6 - see above) of a news-letter edited by Wilson "Bob" Tucker and Robert Bloch, SCIENCE FICTION WORLD, which included promos for Gnome books, interviews, art, etc., in the mid-Fifties, but these are so rare that we have never, and we mean never, seen a copy of any of them for sale."
