In D. H. Lawrence's third novel, Sons and Lovers, Paul Morel grows up in a household with a cold father, who is a coal miner, and an overly possessive mother. As Paul matures, his emotional conflicts prevent him from having intimate romantic relationships with two separate women. A groundbreaking work, it explores the effects of early childhood on later life, and many Freudian theories of psychology including the Oedipal complex. Lawrence, the son of a coal miner and overbearing mother himself, based the book closely on his own life. His publisher edited out roughly ten percent of the novel prior to its being released due to concerns over its erotic content. Controversy surrounding the book foreshadowed the obscenity trials of Lawrence's later masterpieces, The Rainbow and Lady Chatterley's Lover.
