About This Item

New York: Charles L. Webster and Company, 1885.. Hardcover. Good. Octavo. 366pp. First edition. Earliest issue, with almost all first issue points: page 13: the illustration captioned 'Him and another Man' listed at p. 88 (BAL first state); the eleventh line from the bottom of p. 57 reads '...with the was...' (BAL first state); page 155 with final 5 "stamped in" by hand, and matching the original font in the setting of the page number (no priority, occurring randomly in all three states independent of other major signs of first printing sheets, but this setting seems to appear least often); the portrait frontispiece is in BAL's first state, "heliotype" imprint on the portrait frontispiece, title page with 1884 copyright on verso; page 9: the heading for Chapter 6 reads "Decided" (later corrected to "Decides"); page143: "I" in "Col." (line 1) missing and "b" in "body" (line 7) broken; and no signature mark '11' at page 161. The final leaf is a blank. Publisher's original sheepskin with the red-and-black lettering labels on the spine. Spine repaired, however, this is one of the finest sheep bindings we have seen on this book. It is estimated that only 2500 copies were issued in this binding. With 174 black-and-white illustrations by E.W. Kemble.

Synopsis

Commonly named among the Great American novels, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, written by Mark Twain, is generally regarded as the sequel to his earlier novel, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer; however, in Huckleberry Finn, Twain focused increasingly on the institution of slavery and the South. Narrated by Huckleberry “Huck” Finn in Southern antebellum vernacular, the novel gives vivid descriptions of people and daily life along the Mississippi River while following the adventure of Huck and a runaway slave, Jim, rafting their way to freedom.
