About This Item

1913-29. Leatherbound. Very good. Unpaginated. 19 x 23 cm. Line drawings as well as signatures, poems, etc. from friends at home and on board ship. Suede cover with gold "Album" and "W.M." Edges gilt. Inserted paper says "Presented by the Girls' Auxiliary to Miss Winnie Martin on the occasion of her leaving Glasgow for Vancouver, Aptil, 1913." 31 leaves with writing in different hands on multi-coloured paper.

Winnie Martin and her family (Maisie Martin, William I. Martin) left Glasgow for Canada on the RMS Grampian in May 1913. They settled in the Grandview neighbourhood of Vancovuer. One drawing by Elizabeth Duncan of Shawlands, Glasgow, is a "Wheel of Fortune" with 18 sections: 1. "What a prize you will be to someone." 2. "Have patience all's well that ends well," etc. Another drawing by Agnes Duncan of Shawlands is of a woman in a long dress and bonnet standing on a small platform with the caption "Votes for Women" and "Tell me, who put you in the position you occupy at present? You may well shut up." Also a petulant schoolboy by Grace Duncan, a woman at a bar, a dog, a butterfly, a couple on bicycles ("off for the Honeymoon") and a bearded man (pencil caricature dated 26-3-22) signed WM Squance. A later entry dated October 18, 1929 is a pem from Nesta Barron of Vancouver addressed to Mrs. Squance, suggesting that Winnie Martin did indeed marry someone with that surname. Winnifred M. Squance died in Vancouver on June 24, 1946.
