About This Item

Stratford Place, May 9, 1785. WELLESLEY, Richard Colley, 1st Marquis Wellesley [1760-1842] [Governor-General of India (1798-1805); Foreign Secretary (1809-12); Lord Lieutenant of Ireland (1821-28)]. Autograph Letter, Signed ‘Mornington’, dated Stratford Place, May 9th 1785, to Monseiur Perrigaud (?), Paris. Written when Wellesley was Earl of Mornington and a member of the English House of Commons. Wellesley promises to pay the remainder of his debt to the addressee and remit the money to Mr. Nesbitt’s before the 22nd of June, “the day to which the bond runs”. “I had hoped long before this time to have been able to pay the remainder of my debt to you, but the failure of a person in Ireland connected with my affairs, has prevented me from getting the money as soon as I expected…I have written…merely to avoid any suspicion of delay on my part, in an affair, when you have conducted yourself so liberally on yours.”. 4to. pp. 2, with integral leaf with cover & remains of seal. horizontal & vertical folds
