5 Albumen stereo photographs, each mounted on yellow coloured studio board with rounded corners, with photographer's imprint & series title, one card with title label mounted on verso. 'Views Around New Orleans'-series (New Orleans in Stereoscope) and 'Views of New Orleans and Vicinity'-series.

Rare stereoscopic views of New Orleans in exceptionally good condition by Samuel Tobias Blessing (1830-1897), photographer of daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, and paper prints made using the wet plate collodion process. He appears to have worked as a photographer in Alabama and Texas before settling in New Orleans in 1854. After the Civil War, Blessing concentrated on selling cartes-de-visite's and stereocards, photographic equipment, frames, and art supplies. His four-story establishment on Canal Street was one of the largest photographic studios and supply houses in the south.

All stereoviews in in beautiful condition, from a Dutch collection formed pre-1870. Cf.: M. Denton Smith & M.L. Tucker, Photography in New Orleans: The Early Years, 1840–1865. (Baton Rouge, 1982).

Description:
[Np: The Photographer, ca. 1963].. Original glossy double-weight gelatin silver print from negative, 14 x 11" (inclusive of margins, image size 12.5 x 10 5/8"). Captioned in pencil on verso. About fine. An original print of one of the sequence of superb photographs taken by Yousuf Karsh on location in South Africa during the filming of the 1964 Diamond Films production, ZULU, directed by Cy Endfield. Karsh's invitation to join the production and photograph the cast and locale resulted in a sequence of photographs of a very high order. The present image is a fine character portrait of South African film actor, Gert van den Berg, in his role as Adendorff. The image is identified as "No. 4-12" in the series, and the subject is misidentified in the pencil caption as "Kurt Van Den Boch." Although this project is not as widely known as Karsh's formal portraiture, examples of the resulting images have featured prominently in both museum and print retrospectives of his career.

Description:
San Francisco: H. H. Bancroft & Company, 1863. 8vo, 16.5 x 11cm, [3], 420, [2]pp, plus Bancroft's advertisements on front and rear endpapers. Original taupe cloth stamped in gilt on front cover and spine, and in blind on rear cover. Near fine with some uneven toning and light bubbling to cloth. Clean and complete internally save for the ownership signatures of John Hume and O. Harvey on the front flyleaf. Second issue of this Civil War era almanac and business directory from Bancroft, first published in 1862. In unusually clean condition for this cheaply produced volume and also quite interesting for its provenance. John Hume was the brother of western detective and lawman, James B. Hume, famous for his bringing of the notorious outlaw and stage coach robber, Black Bart, to justice. At the time of this publication, John served as District Attorney in El Dorado County, his salary of $2,000 being noted in the almanac. Obed Harvey was a politician and leading physician in El Dorado county (Placerville).… Read More

Edited (with notes) by Richard F. Burton. Housed in a custom enclosure. (Wagner-Camp 335:4; Cowan p.414; Graff 2677; Howes M279; Penzer p.69-70; Sabin 44515) First edition.
Randolph B. Marcy was a career soldier (he graduated from West Point in 1832) at a time when the career would be likely to involve exploration. In the 1840s, part of his role was the escorting of emigrant wagon trains through Oklahoma and Texas, and mapping their routes. In 1857, he was involved in the expedition against the Mormons in Utah, leading his men in a forced march through the Rocky Mountains in winter. In 1852, he was commander of an expedition to find the headwaters of the Red River. All this experience meant that he was the ideal author for a book on how to survive in the wilderness.
