Binding by Canapé of three-quarter turquoise morocco and marbled boards; spine with gilt bordered floral design in five compartments with raised bands, gilt lettered. Original paper wrappers bound in. Pretty binding in fine condition, contents clean and bright. Inscribed by the author on the colophon. One of 250 copies. Twelve erotic illustrations with lesbian themes in bright pochoir color by Gerda Wegener, Art Deco painter and illustrator for Vogue, La Vie Parisienne, Fantasio and other French magazines. Born Gerda Gottleib in 1886, she married Einar Wegener, a fellow Danish artist who came out as a transsexual woman and was her favorite model. Her work, unsigned, is identified by the tiny domino mask at bottom of each plate. A female artist in the predominantly male Art Deco period. Berlin. Frensel Und Engelbrecher. 1931-1934. Bound in pictorial wrappers. 4to. 9.25" x 12.25 Profusely illustrated throughout by chromolithographs, colour and monochrome plates - many tipped-in, illustrations en texte, drawings, die cuts, etc. reproducing period advertising from a myriad of international sources. " Gebrauchsgraphik, Monatschrift zur Förderung künst-lerischer Reklame (Commercial Graphics, Monthly Magazine for Promoting Art in Advertising), which was published in Berlin from 1924 until 1944, was the leading voice of the Avant-Garde influence on the European Commercial Art and Advertising industries before World War II. In the thirties, all roads led through Berlin, and Gebrauchsgraphik spotlighted all of the aesthetic trends fermenting in Europe -- Art Deco and Surrealism from Paris, Constructivism from Moscow, Futurist Fascism from Rome, De Stijl and Dutch typography from Amsterdam, and of course the spreading influence of the Dessau Bauhaus. A journal that was…

It is in a prologue, three acts, and an epilogue by Nikolay Andreyevich Rimsky-Korsakov to a libretto by Vladimir Nikolayevich Bel'sky after the eponymous imitation folk tale in verse by Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin, based in turn on 'The House of the Weathercock' and 'Legend of the Arabian Astrologer' from The Alhambra by Washington Irving. Description:
Sydney: Art in Australia, 1920. A beautiful copy of Lindsay's famous work covering the meaning of life and art, drawing on philosophical concepts. Signed on front endpaper by Lindsay with a full page original etching tipped in "All who would examine the problem of Life must first remove from it the problem of Existence. It is the confusion between these two things that has confused all human morality. By Existence one comprehends the body, and all that serves to supply its needs, to keep its machinery active. By Life one understands all that goes beyond the body, the impulse that we vaguely call the mind, the soul, the intellectual process. The body is the poor relation of the mind, the servant, the vehicle. In serving its needs, one supplies movement; in servings its senses, one supplies material for the intellectual process. Between these functions, high and low, one must seek a direction for Man's destiny. To find that direction is to find the High Morality. In short, to find the direction of…

This book is in good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, spine, edges and corner of the cover. There is some dog-earring on the right corner pages of the book. The pages are white, crisp and clear of any markings. "This is a history of the visual arts produced in the geographical area that now constitutes the United States. Such a book is difficult to title. A History of United States Art sounds awkward and logically might even be construed to exclude the arts of the colonial period. Thus, with apologies to our northern and southern neighbors, I use the title A History of American Art, knowing full well that the terms America and the United States are not synonymous...." - Preface from A History of American Art
