About This Item

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1920 First edition, first printing. One of 5,000 copies. Publisher's green T cloth (no priority), lettered in blind to front board and lettered in gilt to spine. Very good or better, with a spot of staining to rear board, a hint of soiling to front board, very light wear to spine ends, a couple of tiny nicks to gilt on spine, otherwise bright, and light bump to bottom rear corner. Overall, a sturdy copy. Bruccoli A 6.I.a. Flappers and Philosophers, the author's first collection of short stories, followed Fitzgerald's debut novel This Side of Paradise, which brought the twenty-four-year-old author much critical and commercial fame. As per Scribner's sales tactics, each collection of short stories was scheduled to follow the publication of a novel, with the goal of the short story collection feeding off the popularity of its companion novel. Flappers and Philosophers contains eight of the author's best early stories: "The Offshore Pirate," "The Ice Palace," "Head and Shoulders," "The Cut-Glass Bowl," "Bernice Bobs Her Hair," "Benediction," "Dalyrimple Goes Wrong," and "The Four Fists." In these pieces, Fitzgerald introduces his archetypal Jazz Age characters that would come to be collectively known as the Lost Generation: attractive, impulsive young women (flappers) and licentious, nomadic young men (philosophers). . First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good.

Synopsis

Flappers and Philosophers was published in 1920 on the heels of Fitzgerald’s sensational debut, This Side of Paradise, and anticipated themes in The Great Gatsby. This iconic collection marks the writer’s entry into short fiction, and contains some of his most famous early stories, including “Bernice Bobs Her Hair,” “The Ice Palace,” “Head and Shoulders,” and “The Offshore Pirate.” In these pages we meet Fitzgerald’s trademark characters: the beautiful, headstrong young women and the dissolute, wandering young men who comprised what came to be called the Lost Generation. With their bobbed hair and dangling cigarettes, his characters are sophisticated, witty, and, above all, modern: the spoiled heiress who falls for her kidnapper, the intellectual student whose life is turned upside-down by a chorus girl, the feuding debutantes whose weapons are cutting words and a pair of scissors. An instant classic in its time, a confirmed part of the canon today, this collection evokes 1920s America through the eyes of a writer indelibly linked to that singular era.  (Publisher Summary - Random House )
