About This Item
Folio (12x16), leather spine & tips with cloth, illustrated, 301-1068 pp. Spine and covers heavily worn and scuffed, with a few tears at extremities, missing front endpaper, and rear endpaper is folded, some foxing and aging, especially first few pages, contents generally clean and in good shape. Despite the fact that this is not a complete year, this is a very rich volume. There are a large number of illustrations by Thomas Nast; many are full page. One of the highlights of this volume is Custer's showdown with the Sioux at the Little Big Horn (see pages 592, 598, 601 and 609). The coverage contains a map of the events, and even a full page cartoon by Thomas Nast poking fun at a proposal to reduce the size of the army. There is also material on the Ku Klux Klan, Chinese emigration, and a tragic Brooklyn theatre fire that killed hundreds of people. Coverage of the American Centennial is also included. Extra postage is required.
