About This Item

[London: 1721]., 1721. 19 ¾” x 23 ¼” (50.9 x 59.6 cm). original colour (lightly browned, short tear to lower margin touching outer edge of border, few stains to margin). Fifth State of Morden’s A New Map Of The English Empire In America (1st State: 1695); Morden and Brown’s imprint changed to John Senex and a dedication to Edgly Hewer of Clapham. Covering the area from Newfoundland to the Mississippi River and from Hudson Bay to Florida, Senex’s map provides extensive geographical information on the southeastern United States. The map shows Quebec, ‘Mount Royal’, the St. Lawrence River, northern lakes and rivers and the five Great Lakes. “…[A]fter the appearance in 1718 of Delisle’s “Carte Du Mississipi” Senex revised his conception of this area, following Delisle only in small part. By this process Senex produced curiously distorted maps of the Great Lakes. In central Michigan, without naming the high plain due to Delisle, Senex places a range of mountains connecting them across the region of present Ohio with the Appalachian Chain.” (Karpinski p. 128) Karpinski, Maps of Famous Cartographers Depicting North America, p. 128, XLVI. Cumming, The Southeast In Early Maps, 172 Tooley, The Mapping Of America, p. 63, 20(b). Kershaw, Printed Maps Of Canada, 326 & Plate 209.. No Binding. Very Good.
