About This Item
London: Blandford Press, 1988. This from the dustwrapper: " This is not a war book about heroes and obedient soldiers; it is just the opposite. It is the true story of a small Army detachment of off-beat soldiers who were landed on the Normandy beaches to provide a technical service for the war machines at the Front Line. They were known as the Normandy Nobodies because they got lost and during the first few battles, Brass Hats did not even know of their existence. This is not so much a Dad's Army romp as a'Wide Boy's'Army farce, in which its members, led by a Canadian Captain, unite in a fruitless attempt to beat red tape. In Brussels, where the citizens were overjoyed at being liberated, the Normandy Nobodies sampled the delights of the Big City and found further outlets for their talents. There are some vivid descriptions of Belgian Resistance members taking unauthorised revenge on collaborators, and a Christmas Eve episode when a drunken Commanding Officer attempts to round up his troops to help stem, the German breakthrough in the Ardennes. In spite of the hilarious episodes in this book, the author has succeeded in writing a valuable documentary in which the lighter side of war goes hand-in-hand with the darker side. The pen-and-ink drawings and cartoons in this book were made by the author in Normandy and Brussels at the time he writes about." 159 pages, 5.75 X 8.75 inches. Very good book in a very good dustwrapper.. First Edition.
