A fine collection of poetical illustrations and satire

The advertisement of 'Poetical Sketches of Scarborough' tells us the original 21 color plates were sketches made as souvenirs of the place during a visit to Scarborough in 1812. "They were not intended for publication, but being found to interest many persons of taste, several of whom expressed a desire to possess engravings of them, and some gentlemen having offered to add metrical illustrations to each the present form of publication has been adopted."

The poems that were written to accompany the illustration were written by three separate authors.

"John Buonarotti Papworth (1775-1847) wrote fourteen chapters of the Poetical Sketches of Scarborough, a light social satire illustrated with twenty-one attractive plates etched by Rowlandson after J. Green, the aquatint being added by J. Bluck and J.C. Stadler. Then follows a pleasant account of Scarborough in very amusing doggerel to which [William] Combe was a contributor" (Prideaux) and "Francis Wrangham contributed four chapters" (Abbey).

David Porter was an early American naval captain who served on the USS Constitution and the USS Essex. While aboard the Essex, Porter faced significant hardships, including the Battle of Valparaiso where the ship was ultimately disabled. Porter kept a journal of his time aboard the Essex, a journal that was quickly published after capture of the Essex.
According to Hill, the second of Porter's 'Journal' is the "best edition" and is more complete even than the first. In fact, this edition contains the first instance of the details of Porter's loss of the USS Essex in 1814. This edition also includes an expanded preface as well as folding maps and notes and illustrations on the Galapagos Islands.
