About This Item

Hardcover. 12mo. Original vellum, lettered in manuscript on the spine, hand-painted borders on boards, gold and purple marbled endpapers, original printed wrappers bound-in. Paris, Albert Messein 1926. Third Edition. Minkoff A-3c. Limited to 100 copies on Arches. This copy inscribed by Harry Crosby: 'Helenka from Harry Paris MCMXXVII.' Helenka was probably Helenka Adamowski Pantaleoni, the Broadway and film actress, intellectual and great beauty who later founded the U.S. Fund for UNICEF and became the president of the U.S. Committee for UNICEF. Adamowski met Harry at Harvard when he was a student after World War I. She remembered him at this time as being 'an incredibly sensitive, high-strung, poetic individual who was wound up to such a pitch that even in those early days I wondered whether he would survive the year.' . . . Harry once took her to the Harvard-Yale boat races in New London, hired an airplane and insisted that the pilot essay some aerobatic stunts. The pilot refused, but 'Harry did succeed in getting him to fly low and at one point we cleared a flagpole by what seemed to be a matter of inches.'' (Wolff, BLACK SUN, pages 68-73). A Fine Copy.
