This is a very good effort by this author in the type of books he has made his reputation on... I like the genre and would recommend it to anyone who appreciates "magical" fiction in the historical type. I have read others of his books and wish I had started with this one (first of the series). It makes better sense that way. Each book does stand alone quite well but understanding comes easier in the proper sequence. I plan to read all of them eventually I find them that enjoyable.
