Total of 711 species of British shells on 26 plates: 642 figures on the 24 plates from the first edition of 1859, and 69 figures on two extra lithographs by Sowerby.
George Brettingham Sowerby II (1812-1884), was a British naturalist, illustrator, and conchologist. Grandson of James Sowerby, the famous English naturalist, illustrator and mineralogist.
Original red, blind-stamped cloth with gilt title to front board, a.e.g, sunning and stains to spine, bumping to corners, bookplate of Charles H. Shaw on front endpaper, delicately hand-coloured plates with some scattered spotting.
