Maroon cloth boards, gilt titles on spine and front board, elaborate gilt decoration on both. Spine titles faded but legible. Front board titles and decorations bright and eye-catching. Small split along upper gutter of front board, cloth at lower front corner worn through. Small split halfway down back gutter. Cloth of binding otherwise well preserved. Front hinge just visible but binding remains secure. Scattered foxing to margins of text pages, but text block remains clean. Plates toning at margins, but colors and gilt of plates themselves remain clean and bright. Handsome copy of a remarkable volume, translated from the original French. Publisher's maroon cloth, recased with spine laid down, lettered in gilt and black, all edges gilt. Very Good+ with wear along edges, exposed tips, small corner chip to second blank. A few tiny stains to contents but no foxing, very bright internally. Recased binding is quite sturdy as well. A French examination of ornament throughout the ages with beautiful chromolithographed plates.
