Description:
FANTASY COMMENTATOR was primarily devoted to articles dealing with various aspects of Fantasy and Science Fiction, rather than fans submitting their fictions, or fan squabbles. Sam Moskowitz, for instance, serialized the first draft of his Fanzine History, THE IMMORTAL STORM, in the pages of FC. A. Langly Searles continued column, FORGOTTEN CREATORS OF GHOSTS, provided bio/bibliographical information about current, and neglected ghost story writers of the past. If you're a pulp collector, Fantasy in the Munsey magazines is an excellent bibliography by William H. Evans. the Clearly printed, well laid out and presented, they took their time with this publication. These early issues deserve to be reprinted. Sam Moskowitz continued FANTASY COMMENTATOR well into the 1980's. A very good copy.

Description:
West Warwick, R.I. : Necronomicon Press, 1996. First Printing. The second biography of Howard Phillips Lovecraft, this Herculean undertaking by S.T. Joshi exhumes incredible minutae of HPL's life and times, and may be dense reading for many; you could term L. Sprague de Campt's biography as a general introduction to the man, whereas Joshi gets inside HPL's skin with a surgeon's skills. This hardbound edition of 250 signed copies was sold out before publication. With the addition of new HPL discoveries, this biography was expanded by Joshi and published in a two-volume set by Hippocampus Press, but this single volume contains all the meat & potatoes, and is the one I find myself referencing most easily. As new in d.j., signed by the biographer.

Description:
Albuquerque,: Silver Scarob Press, 1973. [First Edition]. Twenty-two page essayabout 22,000 words, by Clark Ashton Smith's bibliographer and romantic poet in his own rite, Donald Sidney-Fryer. The essay declares CAS truly the last great romantic poet writing in traditional form, tracing an historic lineage from Edmund Spenser, through George Sterling. It's heavy going, but the author knows his history, and his subject, very well. Nicely signed and inscribed by the author. Published by NYCTALOPS'sHarry O. Morris under his Silver Scarob Press moniker. Staple-bound between heavy paper covers.

Description:
Sauk City: Arkham House, 2003. First Edition. Two hundred-seven-six letters are referenced, from the year 1911, when CAS was eighteen, until just a few weeks before his death in 1961. Smith's letters are in no way as compelling, absorbing, or entertaining as Lovecraft's, as Smith, in addition to working hard manual labor, writing his fictions, painting, and translating, he didn't have the time on his hands that HPL did. An excellent frontispiece photo of CAS by the noted California photographer, Wynn Bullock, with a nice cover of a colorized, altered Walter J. Daugherty photo of Clark Ashton Smith Sculptures. As new copy in d.j.

Description:
London: Jupiter Books, 1979. First Edition. An excellent narrative, and visual history of the legendary magazine, by an equally legendary British collector and scholar. Illustrated throughout with black and white, color, and color imposed cover replications of the more noted issues. Durie's commentary is lively and informative, covering, editors, authors and artists. Durie was one of the early Brits to have a complete run of the magazine, personally. If you have a mere inkling of interest in The Unique Magazine, you will enjoy this volume. Oversized. A few rubs to the d.j., else a fine copy.
