Presentation copy, inscribed by Gioia on the title page to the poet and publisher of poetry James L. Weil, and with an invitation card to the book's publication party loosely inserted. Not to be confused with the earlier Windhover Press publication of the the same title.

Hand-painted maquette artwork for a poster, approx. 18 X 25 in., painted in black with "Liljan Espenak in red with a pair of ochre accents. Signed by the artist, Boris Lurie. The Norwegian-born dancer was a pioneer in dance therapy, working with physically and mentally disabled hospital patients. She performed improvisationally, in dialogue with the audience, and with improvised piano accompaniment. This Carnegie Hall recital was her final performance, as she dedicated the rest of career to therapy. Boris Lurie, the artist, was the founder of the No!art movement, which rejected contemporary Pop and Abstract Expressionist art, the art market and critics, and called for social and political engagement.

A nice copy of the author's third novel. Critically acclaimed in his time, most of which he spent as an expatriate in France, Updegraff has since slipped into neglect. He is perhaps best remembered today for having been the Yale roommate and longtime close friend of Sinclair Lewis. The uncommon dust jacket features an illustration by Hans Flato.

The 1931 Cranach Press edition ranks alongside Kessler's Hamlet and Eclogues as the highest of his achievements as a small-press publisher. The illustrations and decorative initials were by Eric Gill, the type specially cut for Kessler by E. Prince. This is a fine facsimile, printed in East Germany.
