The dust jacket has an old owner name in ink on top edge of rear panel the lower corner of fold-over is price clipped. The dust jacket is now in a protective, removable acetate cover. Bound in the publisher's red cloth covers with gilt spine lettering and includes the original cream-colored slipcase and Sandglass notes issued by the publisher loosely laid in. This copy in organge, blue and whitish squares (not completely sure if the whitish portion is part of the design) on covers with black spine and gilt lettering. The spine is lightly sun faded. There are two owner names (appears to be the same person--one dated 1944 and another that appears to reflect her married name is dated 1962). This was probably printed in 1944 based on the Sandglass No. 3H; however, I have not seen a reference to a cover with the squares on it (this book seems to have been issued with several different covers over the years). The gray slipcase is complete, but split at seams.Includes the Sandglass brochure (3H) loosely laid in. Also includes the 4 page publishe's Sandglass publication describing the book and the illustrator. The only date is that of the 1941 Limited Editions Club first edition--New York Heritage imprints were used fom 1938 - 1972. Norwalk, CT: Easton Press. Near Fine. 1980. Hardcover. Moliere's "Tartuffe" was first presented to Louis XIV in 1667 and "The Would-Be Gentleman was first produced in 1670." Moliere was his stage name; his given name was Jean-Baptiste Poquelin. The spine title is: "Two Plays." This book is beautifully bound in a full red leather binding with 22 kt gold spine and cover decorations. The spine has three raised bands with four decorated compartments. All edges are gilt, and the book has red silk moire end papers with a yellow silk ribbon bookmark. The pages are acid-free and they are smyth-sewn, not glued. Philadelphia: Thomas Dobson. Good. 1787. First American Edition. Hardcover. William Cowper (1731 - 1800) was a British poet whose fragile mental health led him to seek solace in Christianity. "The Task" is considered to be his major work and was highly regarded and popular in its day as well as by 19th century poets. He is now considered to be the foremost poet of his generation. The six books of The Task are: "The Sofa," "The Timepiece," "The Garden," "The Winter Evening," "The Winter Morning Walk," and "The Winter Walk at Noon." Cowper speaks of Christianity, the gifts of nature, and attacks slavery, superficiality, etc. First published in London in 1785, this is this is the first American edition (a "New Edition") and was printed by Thomas Dobson, a Philadelphia printer who had recently come from Scotland.
