Zola's The Drinking Den provides a Naturalist look into the lives of the French working-class of the 19th century. Yes, it is sad, but that's life isn't it? I believe that is Zola's point. That life isn't always as rosy as people paint it, but the gritty relity that people like Gervaise endure everyday have it's own certan beauty.
