Description:
1858 Traditions of Dee-Coo-Dah Native American Indian Mounds Illustrated Pidgeon
"Traditions of Dee-Coo-Dah" is general history of the lost Native American Indian tribes of Northern Mississippi and the ruins they left. He claimed to have discovered a network of symbols used by an ancient race of Native Americans called the 'Dee-Coo-Dah.'
Even though the events described in 'Traditions' are disputed, the content is highly desirable and helps develop the legends of 19th-century North American Indian tribes. According to Sabin, this book is
"A record of personal examination of a great number of ancient mounds and fortifications, and of the traditions regarding them, obtained from an aged Sioux chief…The numerous plates afford very clear illustrations of many remains of Indian structures."

Pagination: 583 pages, 22 plates, 4 maps, all blanks present. Includes fascinating pencil diagram of oil rig on back of map. Oil rig drawing titled "Sheffield Oil Company. Warren(?), Co., Pa." That pencil drawing is the only interior writing or ownership marking anywhere in the book. Condition is a mixed bag. Description:
New York: Random House, 1970. Very good plus in very good dust jacket.. First edition of this memoir by one of the founders of the Black Panthers, with a focus on his trial as one of the "Chicago 8." This powerful and harrowing memoir was written during Bobby Seale's time in prison as one of the "Chicago 8" defendants. Due to Seale's protests against the blatant racism he and the seven other men faced during the trial, the judge ordered him to be bound and gagged for the duration - the shocking image of the restrained Seale adorns both the dust jacket and the binding of the book. An important firsthand account of the early days of the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense, and a clear manifesto for the organization's stance. 8.5'' x 5.75''. Original brown cloth binding with metallic red embellishment and spine lettering. Original unclipped ($6.95) color pictorial dust jacket, designed by Bob Antler with illustration by Howard Brodie. This book is in good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, spine, edges and corner of the cover. There is some dog-earring on the right corner pages of the book. The pages are white, crisp and clear of any markings. "This is a history of the visual arts produced in the geographical area that now constitutes the United States. Such a book is difficult to title. A History of United States Art sounds awkward and logically might even be construed to exclude the arts of the colonial period. Thus, with apologies to our northern and southern neighbors, I use the title A History of American Art, knowing full well that the terms America and the United States are not synonymous...." - Preface from A History of American Art

This book is in good condition. There is a lot of wear on the front, back, spine and edges of the cover boards. There is also a substantial amount of staining on the cover boards. The pages are yellowed and tanned. There are also markings throughout the book. "The roots of this book reach back to the early 1950s in Paris, where I began my professional career as a journalist. France, supported by the United States, was then fighting to retain its hold in Indochina against the Vietminh, the Communist-led nationalist movement there. As I reported on the French end of the war, I soon became acquainted with the names and places in Vietnam from a distance, But I scarcely imagined that they were to be part of my own experience. Then, in 1959, I was assigned to cover eastern Asia; the region that included Vietnam became my beat for more than two decades. I visited Vietnam most recently in 1981 for seven weeks, the longest permitted an American correspondent since the Communists gained control of the entire… Read More

Description:
Indianapolis: Dog Ear Publishing, January 2013. Trade Paperback. Fine. Slight reading wear to corners, otherwise pristine. Not from a library. No remainder mark. Not clipped. Not damaged. Suitable for gifting. 163 pages. The 25 authors of this book were volunteers in the first Peace Corps rural community development project in Africa: Sierra Leone, 1965-67. They are also the first group to tell a collective story of Peace Corps volunteers, anywhere. The Peace Corps was in its infancy then, and memories of John Kennedy were strong among the young volunteers. Sierra Leone was also in its infancy in the first few years after independence, before military coups and tribal warfare became common. The authors forthrightly recount their feelings of loneliness and isolation, and their frightening experiences with secret societies and witchcraft, but their uniquely optimistic "can-do" American attitude brought most through a great life experience.
