Description:
Paris, Charles Gosselin, 1831.
Two 8vo volumes [205 x 126 mm] of: I/ (4) ll. for the half-title, title and foreword, 404 pp. ; II/ (2) ll., 536 pp. for part 2. Both titles are decorated with Tony Johannot's woodcuts engraved by Porret. Bound in blue half calf, flat spines. Reliure de l'époque.
First edition of the famous and first great novel by Victor Hugo.
Carteret, I, pp. 400-402; Escoffier 870; Vicaire, Manuel de l'amateur de livres du XIXe siècle, IV, 256-257.
This copy belongs to the second state, with the author's name on the title and the fictitious mention "Seconde edition" below the title.
"Since Gosselin's copy appeared at auction (Leroy auction, March, 26-27th, 1931, N°328), it became indisputable that the mention of a second or third edition doesn't take anything from the first edition nature of a book.
Gosselin-Leroy's copy bore indeed on a fourth edition of Notre-Dame de Paris, 1831, the following autograph note:
'First edition published in 1100 copies that have been, following the… Read More

The Nonesuch Press, London, 1937 - 1939, 23 volumes and a book-form case (titled "Plate"), containing a woodcut plate entitled "Leaving the Old Curiosity Shop," drawn by George Cattermole for Chapman & Hall, Ltd., a print of the woodcut, and letter from Chapman & Hall guaranteeing the plate's authenticity. Edited by Arthur Waugh, Hugh Walpole, Walter Dexter and Thomas Hatton. Limited to 877 copies, a limitation based on the number of illustrations in the first editions of Dickens, where each set received one of the 877 illustration wood or steel blocks. Each volume with the Ex Libris bookplate of Carlotta and Eugene O'Neill. Carlotta's fourth marriage was to O'Neill; his third marriage. O'Neill had instructed his publisher to wait 25 years after his death before publishing Long Day's Journey Into Night, however, Carlotta took the play to another publisher, whereupon it was published less than 18 months after O'Neill died. The play was produced in 1956 on Broadway and won a Pulitzer… Read More

This comedie-ballet was first performed on August 17, 1661 at Vaux-Le-Vicomte in Fouquet's castle, in the presence of Louis XIV.
This play by Moliere is among the most sought-after, its printing having been disturbed by the arrest of Fouquet.
"A singular anomaly is noticed in the pagination.
The copy is composed of quires comprising 6 leaves each. The first quire signed A begins with the title and ends on the verso of the Epistre au Roy, which is blank. The second quire signed A begins with the Preface and ends on page 10, that is to say on the back of the first leaf of the piece. Usually, this page 10 should be numbered 12, the recto… Read More
